Metallica - 2008 Death Magnetic (2CD+DVD) (Limited Edition 'Coffin Box')

Call Death Magnetic Kirk Hammett's revenge. Famously browbeaten into accepting Lars Ulrich and producers Bob Rock's dictum that guitar solos were "dated" and thereby verboten for 2003's St. Anger -- a fraught recording chronicled on the 2004 documentary Some Kind of Monster -- Metallica's lead guitarist dominates this 2008 sequel, playing with an euphoric fury not heard in years, if not decades. This aesthetic shift isn't because Hammett suddenly rules the band: powerless to add solos to St. Anger, he couldn't reinstate them without the blessing of Ulrich and James Hetfield, the politburo of Metallica. The duo suffered some combination of shame and humility in the wake of the muddled St. Anger and Monster, convincing these two unmovable forces to change direction. They ditched longtime producer Rock -- who'd helmed every album since 1991's breakthrough blockbuster Metallica -- in favor of Rick Rubin, patron saint of all veteran rockers looking to reconnect with their early spark. Rubin may be the go-to producer for wayward superstars but as the producer of Slayer, he's also rooted in thrash, so he understands the core of Metallica's greatness and gently steers them back to basics on Death Magnetic.

Of course, Metallica's basics are pretty complex: intertwined guitar riffs, frenetic solos, and thunderous double-bass drums stitched together as intricate seven-minute suites. Metallica slowly weaned themselves away from labyrinthine metal during the '90s, tempering their intensity, straightening out riffs, spending nearly as much time exploring detours as driving the main road, all the while losing sight of their identity. This culminated in the confused St. Anger, a transparent and botched attempt at returning to their roots, crippled by the chaos surrounding the departure of bassist Jason Newsted. With all their problems sorted out in public -- including replacing Newsted with Robert Trujillo, who acquiesces to the Metallica custom of being buried far, far in the mix -- the group embraces every gnarled, ugly thing they eschewed in the years since "Metallica." Death Magnetic bounces the band back to the days before Bob Rock, roughly sounding as if it could come after ...And Justice for All. Such a deliberate revival of the glory days can be tricky, as it could make a group seem stuck in the past -- or, just as badly, they can get essential elements wrong -- but Death Magnetic is a resounding success because they hunker down and embrace their core strengths, recognizing that their greatest asset is that nobody else makes noise in the same way as they do.

That's the pleasure of Death Magnetic: hearing Metallica sound like Metallica again. Individual songs and, especially, Hetfield's lyrics -- less the confessional ballast of St. Anger, more a traditional blend of angst and terror -- are secondary to how the band sounds, how they spit, snarl, and surge, how they seem alive. Metallica isn't replicating moves they made in the '80s, they're reinvigorated by the spirit of their early years, adding shading they've learned in the '90s, whether it's the symphonic tension of "The Unforgiven III" or threading curdled blues licks through the thrash. Listening to the band play, it's hard not to thrill at Metallica's mastery of aggression and escalation. There is no denying that the band is older and settled, no longer fueled by the hunger and testosterone that made their '80s albums so gripping, but on Death Magnetic older doesn't mean less potent. Metallica is still vitally violent and on this terrific album -- a de facto comeback, even if they never really went away -- they're finally acting like they enjoy being a great rock band.

Perhaps the first example of "dragon rock" -- a style perfected by bands like Iron Maiden and Dio in the early to mid-'80s -- was Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, a rather pretentious 1975 collection from the guitarist's first post-Deep Purple project. Fittingly enough, a young Ronnie James Dio provides the goblin-like frontman presence required by the increasingly Baroque Blackmore. The young Dio is at his best when he fully gives in to his own and Blackmore's medieval fantasy leanings, in hard-rocking tracks like "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves" and "Man on the Silver Mountain." The dark, trudging doom rock of "Self Portrait" most clearly showcases what they were capable of. The album's ponderous lyrics are occasionally punctuated by poetic phrases such as "crossbows in the firelight." Rainbow become a true embarrassment when they try to lighten up and boogie down. "If You Don't Like Rock ]n' Roll" is really an abomination, a pale imitation of second-rate radio-rockers like BTO. Although Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow provides a few listenable tracks, its primary value is historical. Look to Rainbow's next album, Rainbow Rising (1976), to grasp the heavy metal potential that is only hinted at here.

DORO - 2014 Powerful Passionate Favourites

In honor of Doro's thirtieth (!) anniversary as a performing artist, a unique show will be presented on May 2nd and 3th in the CCD Stadthalle in Doro's hometown Dusseldorf. Because of the fact that also the record company want to add something extra to this event, there will be a special '30 Years Anniversary-Edition' version of Doro's latest studio album 'Raise Your First' released, with which the bonus-CD 'Powerful Passionate Favorites will be added (which by the way can also be purchased separately on vinyl). The first song that we get to hear on this record is a remixed version of 'It Still Hurts', the ballad on which Doro is teamed up with Lemmy. I wasn't very impressed by the original version of this ballad and that still is the fact after listening to this Jacob Hansen remixed version. Next we find a French version of the single 'Raise Your Fist In The Air', which is nice to hear for once, but doesn't add much to the original version. The Led Zeppelin-cover 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You' is a lot more fun, although this version is no match for the original of course. 'Nutbush City Limits' is very well done and Doro's version of this Tina Turner classic is definitely worthwhile listening to. With 'Only You' a new version of the Gene Simmons track is featured, which was originally written for the 1990 album 'Doro'. The Dio-cover 'Egypt (The Chains Are On)' is quite enjoyable as well, but that's certainly not the case for the Metallica-cover 'Nothing Else Matters'. Doro's vocals just don't match with this great track and that somewhat detracts from the original. The new song 'Warfare' is in my opinion the best what this 'Powerful Passionate Favorites' has to offer, because this is quite a nice headbanger well suited for Doro's band. The song is written for the movie "Anuk 2", in which Doro herself is featured as the warrior Meha. The ninth and last track of this bonus-CD is a demo home-recording of a new song entitled 'NYC Blues' and for me they could have better left it off. As a bonus-album this 'Powerful Passionate Favorites' is a nice extra, but nothing more than that...

Lizzy Borden - 1989 Master Of Disguise (1989) [Japan 1st Press]

1989 should have been a colossal year for Lizzy Borden. The L.A. band's last album, 1987's 'Visual Lies' was still buzzing in the underground and its "Me Against the World" single was a fixture on MTV's Headbanger's Ball. The stage was set for the band's next release to take them to the level at which groups like Queensrÿche and Megadeth rested. But instead of recording another album filled with straight-forward metal anthems, Lizzy Borden unleashed a completely different type of animal on us.
'Master of Disguise' offered much more than the average metalhead at the time could appreciate or really even grasp. Sure, there were songs like "Phantoms" and "Roll Over and Play Dead" that wouldn't have sounded out of place on their earlier, more metal-leaning efforts. But MOD was also filled with elaborate orchestration, horns, and even some pop-informed ballads. Those are the kinds of musical elements that might as well be kryptonite to close-minded metal fans. ~ review by Carlos Ramirez (NoiseCreep.com)

Carved in Stone is the second solo album by Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil and was released in 1995. Following this release Vince returned to Mötley Crüe in 1996. This is the last album to feature Robbie Crane on bass. It featured guitarist Brent Woods, who had previously played with Wildside and was later a touring guitarist for Warrant. Drummer Vik Foxx was also a touring member of Warrant, though not at the same time as Brent Woods. The album charted at #139 on The Billboard 200.
