Chrissie Hynde took a long, hard road to rock & roll stardom, but when her band, the Pretenders, finally broke through in 1979, they wasted no time, growing from promising newcomers on the British music scene to major international stardom with a pair of smash albums to their credit in a mere three years. But the Pretenders' meteoric rise came to a crashing halt in 1982, when drug abuse claimed the life of guitarist James Honeyman-Scott and forced Hynde and drummer Martin Chambers to dump bassist Pete Farndon, who would also succumb to an OD in April 1983. Hynde was forced by circumstance to reinvent the Pretenders for their third album, 1984's Learning to Crawl, but if the new edition of the group lacked some of the spark of the band that made the first two LPs, through sheer force of will Hynde created a masterpiece. While Hynde hardly held back in her emotionally potent songwriting in the Pretenders' early work, on Learning to Crawl there's a gravity to her lyrics that blended with her tough but wiry melodic sense and streetwise intelligence to create a set of truly remarkable tunes. "Back on the Chain Gang" is a touching tribute to her fallen comrades that still sounds bitterly rueful, "Middle of the Road" is a furious rocker that explores the emotional and physical toll of a musician's life, "Time the Avenger" is a taut, literate examination of a businessman's adulterous relationship, "My City Was Gone" deals with the economic and cultural decay of the Midwest in a manner both pithy and genuinely heartfelt, and "2000 Miles" is a Christmas number that demonstrates Hynde can be warm without getting sappy. As a guitarist, Robbie McIntosh brought a simpler and more elemental style to the Pretenders than James Honeyman-Scott, but his tough, muscular leads fit these songs well, and bassist Malcolm Foster's solid punch fits Chambers' drumming perfectly. Three albums into her recording career, Chrissie Hynde found herself having to put the past to bed and carve out a new beginning for herself with Learning to Crawl, but she pulled it off with a striking mixture of courage, strength, and great rock & roll; with the exception of the instant-classic debut album, it's the Pretenders' finest work.

Kiss - Paul Stanley/Gene Simmons/Ace Frehley/Peter Criss (1978/2008, 4xSHM-CD)

Kiss was at their commercial peak by 1978. Alive II was the band's fourth platinum album in just under two years, and the ensuing tour had the highest average attendance (13,550) in the group's history. In addition, Kiss' gross income for 1977 was $10.2 million. The group, along with creative manager Bill Aucoin, sought to take the band to the next level of popularity. To that end, an ambitious, two-pronged strategy was devised for 1978.

The first part involved the simultaneous release of four solo albums from the members of Kiss. Although Kiss has claimed that the solo albums were intended to ease rising tensions within the band, their 1976 record contract did in fact call for four solo records, with each of them counting as half an album toward the group's five-record commitment.[37] Each album was a solo effort (none of the group appeared on another's album), and were all released and marketed as Kiss albums (with similar cover art and poster inserts). It was the first time that all current members of a rock band had released solo albums on the same day.

For the band members, it was a chance to showcase their individual musical styles and tastes outside of Kiss, and in some cases to collaborate with contemporary artists. Stanley's and Frehley's albums stuck pretty closely to the successful hard rock style that Kiss had utilized, while Criss' album featured an R&B style and was loaded with ballads. Simmons's was the most eclectic of the four. It featured hard rock, ballads, Beatles-influenced pop, and ended with a straight cover of "When You Wish upon a Star" (from the film Pinocchio). Simmons' many collaborators included Aerosmith's Joe Perry, Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen, the Doobie Brothers' Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, disco diva Donna Summer, Janis Ian, Helen Reddy, Bob Seger, Katey Sagal and then-girlfriend Cher.

The Kiss solo albums were released on September 18, 1978. The marketing blitz behind the albums was unprecedented. Casablanca announced it was shipping five million total copies of the albums (guaranteeing instant platinum status), and they spent $2.5 million marketing them. All four solo albums made it into the Top 50 of the Billboard album chart. All four solo albums sold about as many copies as Love Gun alone. Of the four, Frehley's album was the most successful (although not by a huge margin) and spawned the only radio top 20 hit (Russ Ballard's composition "New York Groove", originally performed by Hello).

Paul Stanley's 1978 solo album was the most Kiss-like of the four, sounding more like an official band release rather than a solo outing. But this isn't necessarily a bad thing -- Stanley had become a seasoned hard rock songwriter by this point, churning out some of Kiss' best material ("Love Gun," "Detroit Rock City," "I Want You," etc.), and wisely stuck to his winning formula on Paul Stanley. With the help of studio musicians, as well as guitarist Bob Kulick (who was almost an original member of Kiss, and brother of future Kiss replacement guitarist Bruce) and Rod Stewart/Vanilla Fudge drummer Carmine Appice, Stanley's album is on par with Ace Frehley's as far as consistency is concerned. A couple of epic compositions (by Kiss standards) are highlights -- "Tonight You Belong to Me" and "Take Me Away (Together as One)" -- as are the more straightforward tracks "Ain't Quite Right," "Wouldn't You Like to Know Me?," "It's Alright," and "Goodbye." While his other Kiss bandmates took more chances with their solo records (with varying results), Stanley's album is more or less what a new Kiss album released in 1978 would have sounded like.

Most Kiss fans associate Gene Simmons with the band's hardest-rocking compositions; after all, he's responsible for such heavies as "Watchin' You," "Calling Dr. Love," "Larger Than Life," and "Goin' Blind." So many Kiss fans must have been surprised when they heard Gene's diverse 1978 solo album, with songs that contained choirs and string arrangements, plus elements of Beatles pop, '70s funk/disco, and feel-good rock & roll. Granted, there are a few heavy rockers (such as the single "Radioactive," "Burning Up With Fever," and "See You in Your Dreams"), but Simmons was always a closet Beatles fan, as evidenced by "See You Tonite," "Always Near You," "Man of 1,000 Faces," and "Mr. Make Believe." The only real misstep is a preposterously embarrassing cover of the Disney classic "When You Wish Upon a Star" (complete with Disney-esque sound effects/music). But Simmons made sure that the top artists of the day lent a hand (Aerosmith's Joe Perry, Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen, Donna Summer, Cher, Bob Seger, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Helen Reddy, and Janis Ian), which makes Gene's solo album an unpredictable yet ultimately enjoyable release.

Of the four Kiss solo albums released simultaneously in 1978, the best of the bunch is guitarist Ace Frehley's. Similar in approach to Paul Stanley's album, Frehley did not stray far from the expected heavy Kiss sound (like Gene Simmons and Peter Criss did with their releases), but Ace was equipped with better compositions than Stanley. With future Late Night with David Letterman drummer Anton Fig helping out (as well as Letterman bassist Will Lee on three tracks), Frehley proved once and for all that he was not simply a backup musician to Kiss head honchos Simmons and Stanley. All of the tracks are strong, such as the venomous opener, "Rip It Out," as well as a few tracks that confirm how Frehley was indulging in alcohol and drugs a bit too much by the late '70s ("Snow Blind," "Ozone," and "Wiped Out"). You'll also find many underrated compositions ("Speedin' Back to My Baby," "What's on Your Mind?," "I'm in Need of Love"), a gorgeous instrumental ("Fractured Mirror"), and the Top 20 hit single "New York Groove." Unfortunately, when Ace left Kiss in 1982 (eventually forming Frehley's Comet), he never came close to topping this solid and inspired 1978 solo outing.

Although it's admirable that Peter Criss tried to explore different musical styles than the average '70s Kiss release on his 1978 solo album, the material (soul, classic rock & roll, ballads, etc.) ultimately falls flat without the input and/or backing of Simmons, Stanley, and Frehley. Due to Kiss' surprise 1976 smash ballad "Beth" (written and sung by Peter Criss), Criss decided to include several similarly styled songs, but the material is completely limp: "Easy Thing," "$Kiss the Girl Goodbye," "Don't You Let Me Down," and "I Can't Stop the Rain," are all bland and forgettable. '70s funk 'n' soul is touched upon with the tracks "That's the Kind of Sugar Papa Likes" and "You Matter To Me," as well as a fun cover of the rock & roll standard "Tossin' and Turnin'," but all are hardly substantial. The track "Hooked On Rock N' Roll" tries to reaffirm that Criss is a diehard rocker at heart

Michael Schenker's Temple Of Rock - 2015 Spirit On A Mission (Japan Edition)

To name your band Temple Of Rock is pompous, pretentious, snooty (at least a bit)? Well, not if you’re Michael Schenker. Temple Of Rock is not only the title of his 2011 solo album, but it’s also an assembly he put together for the support of this release. This star-studded lineup (a literal temple of rock, indeed) comprises Schenker, Herman Rarebell (ex-Scorpions) on drums, Francis Buchholz (ex-Scorpions) on bass, Doogie White (ex-Rainbow, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen, WAMI) on vocals, as well as Wayne Findlay on keyboards and 7-string guitar. And just conversely to the majority of super groups in the history of rock, this kind of ally seems to work out particularly well to the German virtuoso and his friends. Having released its first album Bridge The Gap in 2013, it took the band less than two years to finish a follow-up to it. Due out in March, via in-akustik, the new album by Michael Schenker’s Temple Of Rock is titled Spirit On A Mission – the missionaries behind the producer’s console are Schenker and the infallible Michael Voss (ex-Casanova, Mad Max, Wolfpakk etc.). The album’s opener “Live And Let Live” starts with an indolent, Bluesy lick, but it quickly loses that slow-ish, languid vibe to it, as it morphs into a fast-paced Hard Rock piece. The rhythm section’s work, as well as lead guitar parts, are sharp and feisty, all complemented by White’s characteristic vocal style. The second track “Communion” is no worse a counterpart to its predecessor. Based on a thick, Blues-infused and Funk-tinted guitar groove, with feisty but nonchalant vocals, it somewhat resembles the style utilized by Glenn Hughes in his later work. Next is “Vigilante Man,” which is embroidered with some of Schenker’s trademark shredding and well-crafted choruses. “Rock City” offers its mad tempo and intensity. As “Saviour Machine” starts, Schenker and the pack enter the territory of Sabbath-esque-yet-updated, lumbering sound; the main guitar parts are low and heavy but densely are twined with majestic, melodic interludes. It’s followed with the wicked, howling rhythm of guitar-laden “Something Of The Night,” again, a very convincing performance from White. “All Our Yesterdays” is a part Psychedelic, part Zeppelin-esque, part Purple-esque kind of thing, seasoned with a modern, crunchy guitar sound. Starting with Rarebell’s short but classy showcase behind the drum kit, the pounding track eight – entitled “Bulleproof” – is the classic UFO sound, transferred into the modern era and a clear homage to Schenker’s early days with Phil Mogg, Pete Way and Andy Parker. The guitar is sharp but melodic, and the captivating melody of the choruses simply is second to none, making the song one of the album’s best moments. During “Let The Devil Scream,” again, there are some tints and flavors of early Sabbath – especially the verses that are embroidered with Ozzy-esque articulation. Next up is “Good Times,” with its nostalgic vibe and its well-crafted melody, followed by the ardent chords and furious rhythm section, combined into a pulsating entity of “Restless Heart.” “Wicked” makes a hard-hitting, gritty final to the set of 12 songs on the album. It’s a fine compromise between a Classic Rock vibe and an updated sound. As long as the eponymous ‘mission’ is combining the ‘70s and ‘80s Hard Rock vibes and modern, huge sound into one, there couldn’t have been a title that’s more appropriate for this album’s content. Tastefully seasoned with tints of Blues, almost literally drenched in fine melodies and laden with instrumental prowess, Spirit On A Mission by Michael Schenker’s Temple Of Rock is a clear example of how the veterans of the Hard Rock scene can continue to compete with the new generation and, perhaps, even win in the end. Let’s only hope the upcoming live performances in support of the album will result in quite a few UFO, Scorpions and MSG classics dropping from the concert set lists. As much as we adore “Lovedrive,” “Doctor Doctor” and “Assault Attack,” there’s an urgent necessity for a handful of tracks off Spirit On A Mission to find their way into the Temple Of Rock’s gig schedules. As far as their finding the way into the hearts of Hard Rock fans is concerned, there is no doubt about the titular ‘mission’ being doomed to succeed. Much recommended.

This version of KISS 40 contains a new studio track entitled "Samurai Son (U.S. Mix)" which is a collaboration between KISS and Momoiro Clover Z. Also, some tracks that were live on the regular 2 disc version are here represented with their studio versions. Other tracks, such as "I'm A Legend Tonight" were not on the 2 disc version at all. An interesting note is how Paul-heavy this compilation is. There are only five tracks that don't feature Paul Stanley on lead vocals.

Judas Priest - 2015 Defenders Of The Faith (1984)(30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition 3CD, Japan)

The last quality album from Judas Priest's commercial period, Defenders of the Faith doesn't quite reach the heights of British Steel or Screaming for Vengeance, in part because it lacks a standout single on the level of those two records' best material. That said, even if there's a low percentage of signature songs here, there's a remarkably high percentage of hidden gems waiting to be unearthed, making Defenders possibly the most underrated record in Priest's catalog. Musically, it follows the basic blueprint of Screaming for Vengeance, alternating intricate speed rockers with fist-pumping midtempo grooves and balancing moderate musical sophistication with commercial accessibility. It's a craftsmanlike record from a band that had been in the game for a full decade already, but was still vital and exciting, and decidedly not on autopilot (yet). The record opens high-energy with the terrific "Freewheel Burning" and "Jawbreaker" before moving into lost anthem "Rock Hard Ride Free," the more complex "The Sentinel," the cold, oddly mechanized single "Love Bites," and the slightly darker "Some Heads Are Gonna Roll." Coincidentally (both were released the same year), there's a bit of Spinal Tap creeping into the band's approach on side two -- not just in calling a song "Heavy Duty," but also in the ridiculous rough-sex ode "Eat Me Alive," which comes off like an S&M-themed "Sex Farm" (albeit without the tasteful subtlety). It wound up getting the band in trouble with Tipper Gore's PMRC, though one wonders if it would have helped or hindered their cause that the song's sexual aggression was, in hindsight, not directed at women. At any rate, Defenders of the Faith charted only one spot lower than its predecessor, and was certified platinum. Hereafter, Priest would have significant difficulties adapting to the fast-changing landscape of heavy metal in the latter half of the '80s.

Red Hot! is one of the many Sammy Hagar compilation albums from his Capitol Records era. This one compiling material from his two live albums released for the label, All Night Long and Live 1980. Tracks 1-6 were taken from All Night Long and tracks 7-11 were taken from Live 1980.This compilation does nothing to correct the erred track break from Live 1980. Here though, the song "In The Night", which actually contained the main verse of two simultaneously played tracks, is omitted from this collection. What remains is the rest of "The Danger Zone", which is actually a Gary Pihl keyboard solo. The song "The Danger Zone" as it appears on the Danger Zone album is not actually represented on this, or any, live release.
